REPORT OF THE EDUCATION SECRETARY TO THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF
THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF SOUTHAMPTON 24 APRIL 2007
Since the last AGM we have had 3 examination sessions with 2123 exam
candidates in 63 subjects sitting at the Southampton Examination Centre.
This is a reduction in candidate numbers of nearly 19% over last year,
largely because the “tick box” exams went on line from January 2007 and
are no longer examined locally.
Absenteeism shows a slight improvement at 11.06% of candidates who
enter, compared to approximately 12% in recent years. The National
Average is about 10%.
I would like to express my thanks for the help of our team of
invigilators without whose support throughout the year the examinations
would not be possible.
In the autumn of 2005 we sent a questionnaire to all registered
examination students of this Institute to enquire what support, if any,
they needed in their studies and as previously reported the response was
disappointingly low at about 8%. There was a majority of interest in
revision workshops but of the respondents very few were interested in
the same subject thus making it difficult to achieve critical mass in
any given workshop.
Council agreed to run pilot workshops in March 2006 and also in
September 2006. Numbers were disappointing although feedback from those
that attended was extremely positive. A subsequent workshop in March
2007 produced only 3 delegates for four workshops and was therefore
cancelled.
The Education Team continues to look at ways to support our students in
their studies and if anyone has any ideas will they please speak to me
after this meeting.
Finally, my thanks go to Paul Cockcroft-Oliver for his strong support
throughout the year.
